Introduction to CBT and EMDR

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thoughts and behaviours that contribute to emotional difficulties. The main principle of CBT is based on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and that by changing unhelpful thought patterns, our emotions and behaviour can be positively influenced.

CBT is an evidence based therapy recommended by the National Institute for Care and Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders.

When working with children, parents are often included in some or all of the sessions in order to help facilitate change and progress outside of sessions.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an eight-phase treatment initially implemented  for the treatment of PTSD, although it has now been developed to include anxiety disorders, depression, phobias and other mental health disorders.

Bilateral stimulation is used in sessions to help the brain process distressing memories so they are no longer as intense or disturbing.

EMDR does not require the client to talk in detail about the distressing issue.

EMDR is endorsed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
